China to cut 200,000 troops by 2005

China plans to cut 200,000 of its 2.5 million troops by 2005 in the next phase of its military modernization, military chief and former President Jiang Zemin announced on Monday.Posted by Bob King at September 1, 2003 8:26 AMThe move is part of the ruling communist party's long-term plan to streamline its people's liberation army, following a reduction of some 500,000 troops from 1996-2000, the official Xinhua News Agency quoted Jiang as saying.
