Gene discovery holds out hope of treatment for asthma victims

ic Wales:

A BREAKTHROUGH has been made in tackling the widespread problem of asthma, which blights the health of children across Wales.

Scientists have identified 291 genes associated with asthma, in particular the gene for an enzyme called arginase, which could revolutionise the future of asthma treatment.

Until now, researchers thought only a dozen or so genes were implicated in asthma, but the new study shows the picture is far more complicated.
